FSS holds dialogue on globalization, large-scale agricultural investment and their impacts on Rural Communities
Forum for Social Studies (FSS) successfully conducted the second public dialogue event of the recently launched dialogue series under the main theme of Land and Food security in Ethiopia on 9th January 2020 at Azzeman Hotel, in Addis Ababa.
The dialogue event started with a welcoming speech by FSS’s Executive Director, Dr YerasworkAdmassie. In his opening remarks Dr. Yeraswork noted that the issue of land governance is a key policy element on which informed discussion and debates are necessary, particularly in the light of the upcoming national elections. Hence this particular dialogue event is intended to provide a platform for policy makers, politicians, researchers, civil society activists and the media to deliberate on recent experiences of the country with globalization induced large-scale investments and their impacts on the rural communities.
Thus the second dialogue event specifically dealt with the topic: Globalization, Large-scale Investments and their Impact on Rural. Dr Fana Gebresenbet, a young scholar who is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Addis Ababa University (AAU) presented a discussion paper on Globalization, Large-scale Investments and their Impacts on Rural Livelihoods.
After being introduced by the facilitator, Mr Ezana Amdework, Dr Fana read a comprehensive one-hour long paper that was well received by those in attendance,as testified by the comments and discussions that ensued.
Around 65 individuals drawn from various sectors, individual political parties, higher learning institutes academia, civil society the private sector and state and independent media organizations attended and actively participated in the live discussion session after the presentation. The event obtained fair coverage on State and independent radio and TV stations. The entire dialogue event (presentation and question and answer etc) was video recorded to be uploaded on the YouTube.
In his brief closing speech, the Director expressed his to the presenter of the paper, the moderator as well as those in attendance, and to OSIEA for its financial support.
FSS will hold the third dialogue event on Women Land Rights on 30 January 2020 at the same place and time.
