The General Assembly of the Forum for Social Studies (FSS), at its 20th General Assembly held on 31 March 2018, has elected Dr. Yeraswork Admassie to be the next Executive Director of FSS for a term of four years. This followed the decision of the FSS Board, which selected Dr. Yeraswork Admassie for the post on the basis of his professional qualifications and his sustained commitment to FSS and active participation in its programs and activities. Dr. Yeraswork’s appointment will come into effect on 1st June 2018.
Dr. Yeraswork, who has a PhD in Sociology from Uppsala University, Sweden, comes after a long and distinguished academic service at Addis Ababa University. Aside from his teaching contributions, he has served as course convener of the PhD Program, and led all the PhD seminar courses in the Guided General Reading course work, Specialized Reading Course work and research proposal development. In addition, he has also served as head of the Department of Sociology and Social Administration as well as the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology.
In addition, Dr. Yeraswork has an outstanding track record in other public service arenas. He is a social and citizen activist appearing on a large number of radio interviews, panel talks/discussions and major television appearances. He has provided valuable service to different civil society and government organizations and the private sector in various capacities not to mention his membership in a wide network of editorial boards and professional associations.
Dr. Yeraswork has published extensively on a wide variety of subjects, including ‘Twenty Years to Nowhere: Property Rights, Land Management and Conservation in Ethiopia – 2000’,‘The Catchment Approach to Soil Conservation in Kenya – 1992’,‘The Araké Dilemma: The Socioeconomics of Traditional Distilled Alcohol Production, Marketing, and Consumption in Ethiopia – 2010’ , ‘The Khat Conundrum in Ethiopia: Socioeconomic Impact and Policy Directions – 2017’, etc.
